EU AI Act: AI Omnibus recalibrates Article 4 – AI literacy remains mandatory
In recent months, targeted changes to the EU AI Act have been prepared through the "Digital Omnibus on AI", which are now coming into force. The requirements regarding AI literacy were an important subject of the legislative process.
A key outcome – and, from the AI Campus perspective, a welcome one: Article 4 of the EU AI Act will not be removed, but instead pragmatically recalibrated.
- Providers and deployers of AI systems must continue to take measures to support the development of AI literacy among their employees and other persons acting on their behalf.
- What is new: They do not have to guarantee that every individual reaches a certain level of competence.
- The European Commission and the Member States are to support organisations with implementation – including through practical examples.
- An AI Board is to develop recommendations and common objectives. In doing so, existing competence frameworks such as DigComp and also the AI Literacy Framework for primary and secondary education are explicitly mentioned as points of reference.
The AI Campus supports compliance with Article 4 with free learning opportunities that clearly explain fundamentals, applications and requirements relating to artificial intelligence, including the courses "Einführung in die KI" and "EU AI Act Essentials".
As part of the project "Strengthening AI competences at universities", funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the AI Campus and its partners are specifically addressing the requirements in the higher education sector.
