AI skills for everyone: Four projects awarded in the KI-Campus idea competition

Three learning programs and one campaign have won the KI-Campus ideas competition. Each will receive funding of EUR 30,000 from the KI-Campus office at the Stifterverband. The Mercedes-Benz Fund is supporting the competition as a partner in the Future Mission Education initiative.

Berlin, 25.04.2024. Competent use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is key to a future-proof society. In the “AI Skills for All” ideas competition, the Stifterverband, with support from the Mercedes-Benz Fund, is funding four projects that aim to establish AI as a widespread competence — targeting students, professionals, and lifelong learners.

The competition was announced by the KI-Campus office at the Stifterverband. A total of 66 project ideas were submitted.

The winners are:

  • FROLLEINFLOW: The learning program “AI Power for Women 45+” is specifically aimed at women aged 45 and over, to familiarize them with AI fundamentals.
  • RWTH Aachen / Goethe University Frankfurt / University Hospital Bonn: The learning program “AI in Rare Diseases” imparts AI skills in the field of rare diseases, about four million people in Germany are affected by.
  • CORRECTIV / Reporterfabrik: The learning program “AI in Journalism” trains editorial teams, teachers, and the public in dealing with AI content in the media.
  • Cosmonauts & Kings: The “AI4Democracy” campaign is intended to give visibility and reach to an initiative on AI for democracy in view of the upcoming elections in 2024.

“We are delighted by the diversity and quality of the submissions, which address AI as a topic for society as a whole. All four ideas make an important contribution to the urgently needed AI-education initiative,” says Andrea Frank, Deputy Secretary General of the Stifterverband.

“Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant for the world of work and for our employees,” adds Sabine Kohleisen, Chief Human Resources Officer and Director of Labor Relations at Mercedes-Benz Group. “As an anchor partner of KI-Campus, we are pleased to support the long-term and sustainable promotion of AI as a broad-based skill.”

A panel of experts in the ideas competition selected the four best concepts according to the criteria of openness, cooperation, innovation, and broad impact. Jury members came from the Kiel Science Center, the Federal Association for AI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, and the Stifterverband.

The winning projects will each receive EUR 30,000 and in 2024 will be implemented within the Future Skills Alliance as part of the Future Mission Education initiative of the Stifterverband.

About the Future Mission Education
With the Future Mission Education, the Stifterverband aims to create an education system for a changing world that will quickly train and upskill more people with the competencies they need. To this end, the Stifterverband brings together key players from business, science, and civil society in a joint initiative and coordinates activities within four strong alliances: Alliance for Teachers, Alliance for STEM Professionals, Alliance for School Plus, and Alliance for Future Skills. Tackling the major challenges in the education system requires strong partnerships — speaking with one voice to policymakers, shaping conditions together, and thus bringing about long-term change in education.
